“There is a strong sense of passion and an intricate, ornate quality in the cultural mix of European religion and traditions with heritage of the New World. This disparate interplay of cultural forces, set a lot of my visual history and influences much of my creative inspiration.”

Keene says of his childhood in South America, "All the things I saw, the art in the churches, the diverse people, their traditions and celebrations strongly influence me."

 He received a BFA from the University of Texas and an MA in Visual Art from the University of Northern Colorado.  He has worked as a graphic artist, photographer, jewelry designer, and high school art teacher.

This diverse background contributes to Mike’s interest in a non-traditional approach to ceramic sculpture. He combines carving, textures with slip and glazing techniques and often designing mixed media pieces with metal, glass and wood elements.
